Michael Corcoran (1827-1863)

Michael Corcoran was the son of a British Army captain who came to America and joined the New York militia and was appointed Colonel. He was awaiting a court martial for refusing to order out the 69th New York to honor the visiting Prince Albert of Wales when the Civil War began. He led his regiment at 1st Bull Run where he was captured and then held prisoner for a year. When he was released he was commissioned brigadier general and raised a brigade in New York that consisted of mostly Irish immigrants and came to be known as Corcoran's Legion. He died when his horse accidentally fell on him.
