Darius N. Couch (1822-1897)
General Darius Nash Couch gained distinction as a naturalist while exploring in Mexico with an expedition from the Smithsonian Institution. Nash became colonel of the 7th Massachusetts at the outbreak of the Civil War, was soon promoted to brigadier general and then major general.
