George Washington Cullum (1809-1892)
Cullum graduated third in the West Point class of 1833 and was commissioned in the corps of engineers. He was brevetted brigadier general and major general for his service during the Civil War. He was superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy from 1864-66 and the author of numerous books on engineering and military history including his monumental Biographical Register of the Officers and Graduates of the United States Military Academy. He also pursued scientific and philanthropic endeavors and was vice president of the American Geographical Society of New York.
