James Monroe Deems (1818-1901)
James Monroe Deems was a Union soldier who served as Major and Lieutenant Colonel of the 1st Maryland Cavalry and was brevetted Brigadier General, U.S. Volunteers. Deems studied music both in Baltimore and in Germany. When the war began, he was an instructor and composer of music in Baltimore. After his service, he wrote music for piano and voice.
