Rene Edward De Russy (1790-1865)
Rene Edward De Russy was an army engineer who was born in Haiti and graduated from West Point in 1812. He served in the War of 1812 and was brevetted Captain for gallantry at the Battle of Plattsburg. De Russy was the superintendent of West Point from 1833-38 and at the outbreak of the Civil War he constructed the fortifications of San Francisco Harbor and was brevetted Major General.
