Philippe Regis Denis de Keredern de Trobriand (1816-1897)
Philippe de Trobriand was an aristocratic Frenchman who spent his youth fighting duels, studying law, and writing poetry and prose, publishing a novel in 1840. He came to the United States in 1841 and married an heiress named Mary Mason Jones. He became a member of New York City's literary group in the 1850's, while he made a living writing for and editing French language publications. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he became a citizen of the United States and was given command of the predominantly French 55th New York regiment, called the Gardes LaFayette. He was brevetted Major General and served in the regular army after the war.
