Abner Doubleday (1819-1893)
Union Gen. Abner Doubleday served in the Seminole and Mexican Wars. Stationed at Fort Sumter, he is reported to have fired the first gun in defense of the fort. Doubleday served in the Union Army as brigadier and major general, taking command of a corps at the first days fighting in Gettysburg after Gen. Reynolds was killed. Doubleday was long credited with inventing the game of baseball in Cooperstown, New York.
