Abram Duryee (1815-1890)

Abram Duryee was a wealthy business man from New York who was active in the state's militia and at the outbreak of the Civil War organized the 5th New York Volunteer Infantry and became its Colonel. The 5th New York became known as "Duryee's Zouaves." He was promoted to Brigadier General, Volunteers and brevetted Major General, Volunteers. After the war he was made police commissioner of New York and later dockmaster.
