Thomas Thompson Eckert (1825-1910)
Thomas Thompson Eckert was a telegraph operator and entrepreneur before the Civil War. During the war Eckert became a major part of the first major use of the telegraph in military field operations. He attained the rank of Brigadier General and was made assistant secretary of war in 1866. After the war he established himself as a dominant managerial presence in the American telegraph industry.
