John Franklin Farnsworth (1820-1897)
John F. Farnsworth was a U.S. Congressman from Illinois, serving as a Republican from 1857-61. At the outbreak of the Civil War he organized the 8th Illinois Volunteer Cavalry and served as its colonel. He was promoted to brigadier general of Volunteers in 1862, but resigned in 1863 to serve again in Congress where he stayed until 1873, supporting the "Radical" Republican agenda that included the Emancipation Proclamation, the Thirteenth Amendment, and the impeachment of Andrew Johnson.
