John G. Fonda
John G. Fonda was born in 1822 and spent most of his life as a surveyor and civil engineer. Fonda fought with the Illinois Mounted Volunteers in the Mexican War. During the Civil War he was a 1st Lieutenant of the 2nd Illinois Cavalry, Major in the 12th Illinois Cavalry, and Lieutenant Colonel and Colonel of the 118th Volunteer Infantry. After the fall of Vicksburg he had command of a cavalry brigade, and was brevetted Brigadier-General.
