John Gray Foster (1823-1874)
John Gray Foster graduated 4th in the West Point class of 1846. He fought in the Mexican War, taught engineering at West Point, supervised harbor fortifications, and was serving under Anderson at Fort Sumter when it was bombarded at the beginning of the Civil War. He was commissioned Brigadier General of Volunteers and then brevetted Major General.
