Scars of Slavery

Former slave shows scars on his back. In March of 1863, this former slave known as Gordon asked Union troops stationed at Baton Rouge, Louisiana, for refuge. He said he had escaped from a Mississippi plantation, where he received these scars from his master "on Christmas Day last." Gordon went on to join the Union Army.
