Freedman's Village at Arlington
A group of African-American men and women are shown here reading the Bible at the Freedman's village in Arlington, Virginia. The village was established across the Potomac River from Washington, DC to help address the needs of the growing number of slaves who had escaped slavery in the South during the Civil War.
