John Pope (1822-1892)
General John Pope was an Indian fighter after 1862 when he was stripped of his field command in the Civil War and sent off to the Northeast. Stationed at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas in the post-war years, he oversaw a series of campaigns against the Plains Indians, and served as senior army adviser on Indian affairs.
