John Brown

John Brown is shown here delivering his final remarks during his arraignment before the court of Charleston. Brown, wearing the patriarchal beard he was known for since 1857, delivered a closing speech that many considered magnificently eloquent and sealed his fate as a great martyr of the abolitionist cause.
