Attack on the Insurgents at Harpers Ferry
This illustration originally appeared in "The Life, Trial, and Execution of Captain John Brown." It depicts the battle at the railroad bridge connecting Harpers Ferry with Maryland. The first fatality of John Brown's raid was a railroad employee who was shot by one of Brown's men. Ironically, the victim was a free black man, Heyward Shepherd.
