During the Illinois Senate race of 1858, Democrat Stephen A. Douglas and Republican Abraham Lincoln faced off for a series of debates on the issue of the future of slavery in America. As this drawing suggests, they drew large, enthusiastic crowds. Although Lincoln lost the election he gained the national attention necessary to gain the Republican nomination for President in 1860.
