Samuel Finley Breese Morse (1791-1872)
Samuel F. B. Morse was an American painter and inventor who, independent of similar efforts in Europe, developed an electric telegraph. In 1838, he developed the Morse Code. He was also instrumental in introducing the daguerreotype in the United States. Morse is shown here with the telegraph in an engraving by George E. Perine.
