Eli Whitney (1765-1825)

Eli Whitney, inventor of the cotton gin and standardized rifle parts. Once a luxury, after his invention cotton became the cheapest and most commonly worn cloth. He graduated from Yale in 1792. This portrait was engraved from the original painting by Alonzo Chappel.
