The Speakeasy

During Prohibition, a new institution was born — the speakeasy. Though illegal, they were frequented by every sort of person, including the rich and fashionable. In this drawing by Pierre Brissaud a well-heeled party of three whispers a secret password to gain entrance to a forbidden place in New York City. This illustration originally appeared in the June 1933 issue of Fortune magazine.
