Dr. John Maynard Woodworth (1837-1879)

After serving in the Civil War as a chief medical officer, Maynard became the surgeon general of the Marine Hospital Service. The service was a forerunner of the U.S. Public Health Service. He was a founding member of the American Public Health Association and an early proponent of sanitary science and its role in hospital design.
