John Bright (1811-1889)
Bright was an English author, economist, statesman and orator who was a staunch laissez-faire capitalist. His inability to halt the Crimean War brought in a nervous breakdown, but he recovered and was elected to Parliament from Birmingham in 1857. Bright fought for parliamentary reform and against laws that favored landowners over manufacturers, becoming a spokesman and hero. A second mental collapse in 1870 led to his retirement.
