"The Ghost Dance of the Sioux Indians"
This depiction of Native Americans practicing their Ghost Dance religion appeared in the January 3rd, 1891 issue of the Illustrated London News. The religion prophesied the peaceful end of the westward expansion of whites and a return of the land to the Native Americans. The Ghost Dance religion is significant because of its role in the Wounded Knee Massacre when the Sioux, wearing shirts called ghost shirts, believed they would be protected from the soldiersÂ’ bullets.
