"Conjuring Back the Buffalo"

A Native American Indian raises the skull of a dead buffalo to the sky in an attempt to bring the animal back from the dead. This illustration, taken from the original painting by Frederic Remington, is symbolic of the central role that the buffalo played in Native American culture and how its fate mirrored that of the Native Americans.
