Carpetbagger Cartoon
Here is a wood engraving by Thomas Nast that originally appeared in the November 9th, 1872 issue of Harper's Weekly. It is a caricature of Carl Schurz carrying bags that are labeled, "carpet bag from Wisconsin to Missouri" and "carpet bagger South." Nast criticized Schurz for his support of Horace Greeley in the 1872 Presidential election on a Liberal Republican ticket as well as his sympathetic policies relating to the treatment of ex-Confederates.
