Execution of A. J. Johnson
Alex J. Johnson enlisted as a private in the Union Army, 1st Alabama Cavalry, Company D on 1 June 1863. A Confederate sympathizer, he deserted while on picket duty a few days later. Johnson was executed on July 23. This photograph was taken for his wife.
