The Marshall House
In 1861, Colonel Ephraim Elmer Ellsworth was leading his regiment through Alexandria, Virginia, when he noticed a Confederate flag atop the Marshall House hotel that is shown in this photograph. Ellsworth climbed to the roof and tore it down. While descending the stairs, he was shot to death by the proprietor, James T. Jackson, who was killed a moment later by private Francis Brownell. Ellsworth was the first Union casualty.
