Excelsior Brigade
Shown here in the Washington Arsenal Yard, this is the Excelsior Brigade, raised by the controversial Democratic politician Daniel Sickles. Civil War soldiers usually enlisted in regiments and then formed brigades at the front. Sickles raised five regiments in New York City immediately after the war erupted and he kept them together.
