Lieutenant William N. Jeffers
Lieutenant W. N. Jeffers, the second man to command the Monitor, was photographed in front of his ship's gun turret. The first commander, Lieutenant John Lorimer Worden, was blinded by a shot from the Merrimac that came right into the sight hole of the Monitor's pilothouse. This photograph was taken by Gardner photographer James F. Gibson on July 9, 1862.
