Thaddeus Lowe in his Balloon

This photograph shows Thaddeus Sobieski Constantine Lowe in his balloon the Intrepid from which he provided aerial observation and photographic reconnaissance for the Union during the Civil War. The scene is near the battle of Fair Oaks, Virginia. He could telegraph information from the air. Brady's assistant made a series of images of Lowe and his equipment.
