Lowe's Balloon
Thaddeus Sobieski Constantine Lowe is shown here in his famous balloon the Intrepid, on a mission to observe the battle of Fair Oaks in Virginia. Crewmen below pay out the mooring ropes. Lowe conducted aerial observation, and even some photographic reconnaissance for the Union during the Civil War. He could telegraph information from the air. Brady's assistant made a series of images of Lowe and his equipment.
