Lowe's War Balloon
Crewmen are shown here inflating Thaddeus Sobieski Constantine Lowe's balloon the Intrepid that was used for aerial observation and even photographic reconnaissance for the Union during the Civil War. Here the giant balloon is being inflated on Gaines' Hill on June 1, 1862. Lowe stands at right with his hand on the balloon. Brady's assistant took a number of pictures of Lowe and his balloon.
