Andersonville Prison

This photograph taken from the stockade provides a view of the north end of the Confederate prison. The trough in the foreground was used as a toilet. Opened in 1864, by July of that year Andersonville held 32,000 prisoners within an enclosure of just sixteen and a half acres. By war's end it had 12,912 graves.
