Emily Thorne
The British Emily Thorne debuted in Manchester, England, then made her U.S. debut in 1862 at the Winter Garden Theatre as Miranda in "The Wizard's Tempest." Together with Mark Smith she took over the management of the Winter Garden in 1863, where she frequently performed. By 1867 the English Thorne had become extremely popular at the Olympic Theatre. She retired from the stage in 1869 and sailed back to England. The actress married John Parker Gilmore, who was known as Captain Cavendish. Thorne poses here in costume as Columbia from the 1867 production of "Columbus Reconstructed."
