Robert E. Lee, Retouched Photograph
The transformation of Robert E. Lee's civilian portrait taken in about 1850-52 to a military officer was accomplished by some strokes of an artist's brush. This is the altered picture, done in about 1859-61, when the country suddenly needed a picture of the young hero who led the Marines in capturing John Brown at Harpers Ferry. Lee is depicted in an invented version of a Virginia general's uniform.
