David E. Herold

He was hanged on July 7, 1865, for his part in the conspiracy to assassinate Lincoln. Said to be mentally retarded, he was a young druggist clerk with a mother and seven sisters. The photograph was taken on the deck of the Montauk, one of the ships that carried the prisoners before they were jailed.
