General Douglas MacArthur
Prior to Pearl Harbor General Douglas MacArthur had been in command of 130,000 troops in the Philippines. Forced to evacuate in 1942 he had vowed "I shall return." Here at center is General MacArthur landing at the beach at Morotai Island. Morotai was situated northwest of the Philippines, and MacArthur would use it as his base for a full-scale invasion of the Japanese-held Philippines in February, 1945.
