Ellen Tree, Mrs. Charles Kean (1805-1880)

Born in London, Ellen Tree was an actress. She debuted as Donna Violante in the "Wonder" at Drury Lane Theatre in 1826. In 1836 Tree made her U.S. debut as Rosalind in "As You Like It" at the Park Theatre in New York. Tree married the famous actor Charles Kean, son of Edmund Kean, in 1842. The couple performed together frequently. In 1853 they staged a spectacular and long-running "Macbeth," famed for its historical accuracy in sets and costumes and for Ellen Kean's "ferocious" performance of Lady Macbeth. From 1865 to 1867 Mr. and Mrs. Kean visited the U.S. Charles Kean died in 1868 and his wife then retired. Ellen Tree Kean was known for her realistic acting.
