Horace Greeley (1811-1872)

Greeley was an American journalist turned political leader who founded the New York Tribune, a Whig newspaper of high journalistic standards that became an important influence in molding the thoughts of the people of the North. Greeley supported the Free Soil movement and abolitionism and joined the Republican party in 1854. He accepted the nomination for the presidency of the Liberal Republicans, but was badly beaten in the election of 1872.
