Confederate Dead on Antietam Battlefield
The Battle of Antietam was the bloodiest single day of the Civil War. By the end of the day of September 17, 1862. 4,710 were dead, 18,440 lay wounded, and another 3,043 were missing. Two days later the photographer Alexander Gardner took this haunting photograph of Confederate dead along the fence-lined Hagerstown Pike.
